Single Crank or Double Crank: Choosing a Hospital Bed

The question we get asked most often in the shop: what is the actual difference between the single crank and double crank bed, and is it worth the money?

The single crank bed adjusts the backrest. That covers sitting a patient up to eat, take medicine or receive visitors, which is most of what a general ward does with a bed all day.

The double crank adds independent knee rest adjustment. Raising the knees stops a propped up patient sliding down the mattress, takes pressure off the lower back, and matters a lot for patients who spend weeks in bed rather than days.

So the honest guidance is this. For a general ward with short patient stays, single cranks are fine, and the KSh 4,000 saved per bed adds up across a ward. For long stay patients, home nursing of a bedridden relative, or anywhere pressure sores are a worry, pay for the double crank. Repositioning is not a luxury in those cases.
